Primary Uses

It is used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia (increased level of lipids in the body) and familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic disorder where the body is unable to remove bad cholesterol from the body).

Side Effects

Patients administered with this medication may experience abdominal (stomach area) pain, rash (change in the colour and texture of skin), malaise (a general feeling of discomfort and illness), numbness (reduced sensation) and pruritus (urge to scratch), rhabdomyolysis (serious syndrome due to direct or indirect muscle injury), myopathy (muscle weakness), hepatic (liver) dysfunction, jaundice (yellow discolouration of skin and mucous membranes), and decreased platelet (a type of cell present in blood) count.

Contraindications

This medicine is contraindicated in patients suffering from hepatic (liver) disorders or biliary atresia (blockage in the ducts that transport bile; a fluid that aids in the digestion of fats, from liver to gallbladder).
