Precautions
The patient taking this medicine must take a regular blood test to blood calcium and phosphate levels. The Patient should inform the doctor about history of Kidney stones and the patient should be advised for signs of hypercalcemia (increased calcium in the blood), calcification of pulmonary (lung) tissue, cardiac valve sclerosis (thickened valve), and arteriosclerosis (thickened arteries).
Expert Advice
This medicine is used for the treatment of renal osteodystrophy (alteration of bone morphology in patients with chronic kidney disease), hyperparathyroidism (decreased secretion of parathyroid hormone), and hyperparathyroidism (excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone). It is also used in malabsorptive and vitamin D resistant rickets (soft bones in children) and osteomalacia (soft bones in adults).
Side Effects
The patient taking this medication may experience nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, rash, and raised concentration of calcium and phosphate in plasma and urine.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in cases of hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) and metastatic calcification (deposition of calcium in normal body tissues).
